A NETBIKES PROJECT (see other netbikes projects)

1981 KAWASAKI KZ750

I had planned to give this a good tidy up and then sell it, well you know how it goes as they say, it has now turned into a pretty major project. As you can see by the pic above it was very ordinary but still not a bad thing. I have not started the motor but did some tests, I turned the motor via the starter and all sounds good, no chain or starter clutch noises etc. 3 cylinders had 150psi and number two had 125. I am hopefull that will come up once I start the bike and run for a bit.

You can see by the first lot of pics below I had pretty well stripped it, the second lot show completed work. What I have done to date includes wire harness repair, I have cleaned all terminals, replaced a number with new factory style ones including the plastic outers, and I have removed all the old outer tape and replaced it with correct harness tape. The same can be said for the switch blocks.

The frame was sanded and painted, the engine was cleaned and repainted, some alloy parts polished, front master cylinder fully serviced and repainted, it did not need kitting. All three brake callipars fully serviced and repainted, the right front still needs some attention as it leaks from the piston area.

Both wheels and sprocket holder have new bearings, the swing arm has new bearings and sleeve, front fork seals replaced. Both sprockets and chain are new. Front tyre is new, rear tyre is as new.

I disammenbled the instruments and repainted all. Lets not forget the painting, many hours have been spent on that job, the pictures tell the story.

Currently I have the carbs stripped for cleaning, these will go back together in the next day or so. I have just fitted new hand grips today.

As I said I was preparing this for sale and I am happy to sell at any time throughout the rebuild process. Just contact me if your interested and come by and have a look, I have kept a record of all money spent and I am happy to show you. Call me on 0422819200 or email me (chris)

Ok check out the pics now, I will add more as it happens.

Cheers.......chris dupen, owner netbikes.com.au

Below, Work Completed or near.

Cover with rattle can paint, sand prepare with orbital and then very used up 240 grade paper by hand, apply generous quantity of Septone primer surfacer over two coats, one day dry time then hand sand with 600 grade paper, apply VHT engine enamel, stand 10 mins, apply second coat, stand for one day, hand sand with (used) 600 grade paper and apply one even coat of Mototec clear, stand 10 minutes and flood coat clear again. Pic was taken just after and the orange peel you see in the photo has disapeared now. I used compressed air to blow away all dust after sanding. Before I applied paint I used my paint stripping gun from a distance of no less that 30cm to warm the cover, warming the cover allows the paint to flow onto the surface better. I will allow at least seven days before I apply any polish. Note this method is not suitable where fuel may be present, the clear just cracks a spak. Simply don't use the clear in areas where fuel splash may occur. To get a decent shine from the VHT engine paint allow seven days drying then use Purple Metal Polish, it has a very fine abrasive content, much finer that Autosol. It does remove a slight amount of colour but leaves behind a decent shine, I used it on the front mudguard.

Almost complete now, just a few details to sort such as some decals and it is right to go. I would like to do just one long ride on it before I sell it. The paint work looks much nicer up real than in the pics, I admit it, I just can't take decent pictures:-) Here is a short youtube I did today.. Note the speedo is not the original, that one didn't go round and round so I took one off a donar bike I have here. That bike will be for sale as parts only if you need anything. The fairing screen had a scratch in it that I couldn't polish out so I covered it with a 2008 VJMC sticker, looks cool:-). The rear shocks will be replaced with the original type from the donar bike also, the ones currently on it are somewhat hard. Well thats it, there will be no further updates to this page except maybe a pic or two of the bike when decals are on it. Remember this bike is for sale, contact details up the page a bit. Oh, almost forgot, if anyone has the rear grab rail for this model please let me know, I would like to fit one...cheers........ chris
