1983 KAWASAKI ZX750 (GPZ750) A1. FIRST MONO SHOCK MODEL.
Well this is the bike as found, and honestly if the motor was good I would have just fixed up the roadworthy stuff and ridden it like it is for a while, I think it looks mean and tuff just as it is. As it turned out besides the motor needing attention everything else did too, all three discs are shot, the rear suspension was collapsed, the front shocks needed resealing, the carbs needed a full strip down etc etc so a full on ground up was my best option. I have had the bike about a year now and inbetween job and other projects i have been slowly giving it attention. To date I have dismantled it COMPLETELY, powder coated the frame and wheels, painted the tank and plastic parts, had all the bolts zinc plated, cleaned and repainted the engine bottom end, bead blasteed the top enad and repainted, reseated the valves and refitted them with new stem seals, have new rings and piston pins ready to fit in the next week or so, stripped cleaned and rebuilt the carbs with new jetting, had the rear mono regassed and re oiled, stripped the front forks, painted the lowers and fitted new seals, fitted all new bearings and seals to both wheels, repainted the swing arm and fitted new needle rollers (a job I hope not to do again too soon), fitted new head stem bearings, polished stator cover and rear alloy grab/tie rails. I think thats about it, assembly begins soon. I will now be moving on to the smaller fiddly stuff like rebuilding the wire harness, restoring the switch blocks etc, there is a lot of work/time in that small stuff.

Below is a pic of a MV Agusta, I would like to get a set of mufflers made like these to fit up to the GPZ, if you know anyone that can do this please advise.
here are just a few pics I have so far, I'll have more in the next week or so.

Sprocket and clutch cover painted with White Knight Epoxy Enamel
Green painting by my son (panel beater) and his work friend (painter).
If you need similar work done let me know, priced better than any paint shop.
Below pics of painted plastic parts. Paint used was VHT Hi-Temp engine enamel, part number SP-997-A CAST IRON. I first bought it to use on a RG250 motor and was trying to replicate the engine colour of later GSXR's, the can lid indicated that it was pretty close however it is not but all the same I found the colour pleasing anyway. When I first used it I gave the can the usual 2 or so minutes shake up but the spray finish was still patchy. A friend suggested I heat it a bit (I have done this before) which I did in a bucket of water for 5 minutes, it then flowed a lot better.
Here is the bike somewhat going together.
Updated November 26 2008
Well it has been a long time coming but I have finally made progress on the GPZ.
Bummer 1: During the head rebuild it was discovered that 2 of the valves had no clearence and the others were pretty close to the lower limit so the project was stalled till I found the money to have this fixed. That is now done and the head is pretty much back to factory settings. With a lot of help from vjmc'er Scott, the head is now installed and engine back in the frame.
Bummer 2: The rear frame section is BENT, looks like it has had a shunt on the left side, so now I have to get that fixed. Pity i didn't notice it BEFORE I powdercoated the frame:-(. We live and learn I guess. I suspect it will be 2009 before that happens and probably over $300.00.
There is still a lot of small stuff i can work on in the meantime though, like my J project:-)
Anyway below are a few pics I took tonight.

Updated July 21 2009
As you can see it has been a long time between updates but I really have to move on this bike now if I hope to ride it to the VJMC rally in October.
The new mufflers made by IS Manufacturing are now complete and fitted, I am yet to decide if I will have them ceramic coated but probably will. I have most of the remaining parts ready prepared to fit so hopefully if I can get a clear day to work on the bike I can get most of it done quickly. Ok look at the pretty pics now, I doubt if you will see too many GPZ's sporting pipes like these ones:-)
HERE IT IS FINISHED
